The Chicago White Sox return to the Cell on Friday night for a weekend set with the Oakland Athletics who are coming off an off day on Thursday.
The White Sox have had a pretty interesting season and things have been very up and down as they got off to a red hot start and looked like a shoe in for the playoffs but they have since gone cold and will likely fall well short of October baseball and start planning for next season. Chicago does have some very good pieces in place anchored by Chris Sale, Todd Frazier, and Jose Abreu but they still have some holes that need to be addressed including some options at the back end of their rotation and some bullpen help to name a few. Chicago is 57-62 and will send James Shields to the hill here as he will face off against Kendall Graveman in this one who has some very good stuff but like the Athletics has had a bit of a tough go of things this season.

The Athletics have dropped six of their last ten games and are a full 17 games under the .500 mark heading into tonight’s game but they too have a nice nucleus and should be able to rejoin the ranks next season. The A’s did part ways with Josh Reddick and Rich Hill as they were sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers but they have some budding young pieces in the minors and have gotten a few back after some trades that went awry over the last two years that could very well have been franchise debilitating.
The Athletics are 1-8 in their last nine road games, 2-6 in their last eight series openers, and 0-5 in their last five against the AL Central while the White Sox are 5-2 in their last seven home games, 2-5 in Shields’ last seven starts, and 5-11 in their last 16 against a righty. Both teams are struggling but the White Sox have the edge on the bump and top to bottom in the lineup and I think they get a big victory here.
