Down at Tropicana Field on Sunday, the Texas Rangers and the Tampa Bay Rays will be finishing off their weekend MLB series.
This will be game three of the set. On Friday, the Rangers took a 6-2 win. In Saturday’s game, the Rays evened it up with an 8-2 victory of their own.
USA TODAY Sports
The Rangers will be rolling with lefty Martin Perez on Sunday. In his 25 starts and 8-8 record this year, Perez holds a 4.09 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP across 152 innings. Perez bagged a win his last time out, going seven innings with five hits and one earned against Oakland.
The Rangers have some enviable hitters in their order. Ian Desmond has put up 144 hits with 85 runs, 20 homers and 74 RBI. Adrian Beltre holds 132 hits with 62 runs, 21 homers and 79 RBI. Rougned Odor has hit 128 times with 72 runs, 23 homers and 62 RBI.
As for the Rays, they’re countering with southpaw Drew Smyly in Sunday’s game. In his 23 starts and 5-11 record, Smyly owns a 4.85 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP in 137.1 innings. Slyly bagged a win against San Diego his last time out, going seven innings with one hit and one earned.
It’s not hard to find the stars in the Tampa Bay lineup. Evan Longoria has hit 137 times with 65 runs, 28 homers and 75 RBI. Brad Miller holds 108 hits with 58 runs, 25 homers and 60 RBI. Logan Forsythe has hit 100 times with 58 runs and 38 RBI overall.
The Rangers are 5-1 in their last six game threes of a series, and 12-3 in their last 15 Sunday games. Texas is also 4-0 in Perez’s last four Sunday starts, and 4-1 in Perez’s last five starts overall.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 1-5 in their last six games versus a left-handed starter, and 4-0 in Smyly’s last four starts following a quality start in his last appearance. Tampa Bay is also 4-0 in Smyly’s last four starts overall, and 4-0 in Smyly’s last four starts on astroturf.
I’m going to take the under here due to the quality pitching matchup. I’ll give the Rangers a slight edge, however, based on offense.
