Headed our way on Thursday from Tropicana Field, the MLB is bringing us the finale of the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays series.
This will be the fourth game of the set. The Red Sox took both Monday and Tuesday’s games, then on Wednesday the Rays won in walk-off fashion in the 11th inning 4-3.

Taking the mound for the Red Sox on Thursday will be lefty Drew Pomeranz. In his 24 starts and 10-9 record this year, Pomeranz owns a 2.95 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP in 140.1 innings. Pomeranz got a win his last time out, going five innings with four hits and one earned in Detroit.
The Boston lineup is one of the nicest in baseball. Mookie Betts has logged 167 hits with 99 runs, 28 homers and 90 RBI. Xander Bogaerts has put up 157 hits with 89 runs and 71 RBI. Dustin Pedroia sits on 151 hits with 83 runs and 55 RBI.
Over on the Rays’ side, we’ll be seeing RHP Jake Odorizzi on Thursday. In his 26 starts and 8-5 record this season, Odorizzi has an 8-5 record with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 148.2 innings. Odorizzi got a win his last time out with six hits and one earned in six innings against Texas.
It’s pretty easy to find the stars in the Tampa Bay batting order. Evan Longoria leads the way with 140 hits, 30 homers, 79 RBI and 67 runs. Brad Miller has put up 110 hits with 59 runs, 25 homers and 62 RBI. Logan Forsythe holds 103 hits with 60 runs and 41 RBI so far.
The Red Sox are 4-1 in their last five game fours of a series, and 4-1 in their last five against the American League East. Boston is also 6-1 in their last seven against a team with a losing record and 7-2 in their last nine games against a right-handed starter.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 2-5 in their last seven Thursday games, and 3-9 in their last 12 games versus a left-handed starter. Tampa Bay is also 1-4 in their last five game fours of a series, and 4-0 in Odorizzi’s last four home starts.
I think Odorizzi will pitch pretty well in this one, but I doubt he’ll be able to overcome the Red Sox offense in the long run. Give me Boston.
