The Seattle Mariners look to snap out of their funk and keep their playoff hopes alive as they take to the road to face off against the Texas Rangers.
The Mariners couldn’t muster much in terms of offense in their weekend series with the Chicago White Sox and it could end up costing them in their bid for a playoff spot in the American League unless they can get back on their feet in this series with the Rangers. Seattle will send Hisashi Iwakuma to the mound tonight as he will face off against Yu Darvish in what should be an exciting pitching matchup despite the contrasting styles and it could come down to a single pitch between these two as both teams are looking to gear up for the playoffs. Seattle has slipped to 1-4 in their last five games and while they are still in the thick of things in the wild card hunt they are slowly playing their way out of the picture as they have to contend with the likes of Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, and the surging Royals and if they can’t stop the bleeding soon they will be left in the dark.

The Rangers look to build on their Sunday afternoon victory as they host the Mariners in this spot and as one of two teams in pursuit of them for the AL West division crown the Rangers know they can all but wrap things up with a series sweep here against Seattle. Texas is one of the deepest teams in baseball and have a lethal rotation that is rivaled by few in the American League and at this rate it looks like they are in a good spot to grab home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Texas will send Darvish to the hill here as he looks to improve on his 4-3 record and lower his 2.91 ERA while Iwakuma stands at 14-9 on the year and sports a 3.81 mark that has him as Seattle’s best arm this season.
The M’s are 8-3 in Iwakuma’s last 11 starts, 1-5 in his last six Monday starts, and 5-2 in their last seven series openers while the Rangers are 5-0 in their last five against the AL West, 5-1 in their last six series openers, and 9-3 in their last 12 home games against a team with a losing road record. Seattle is starting to get desperate but they are in tough here in this series with Texas and things don’t go their way to kick things off.
