For Saturday’s game, the Braves will be rolling with RHP John Gant. In 13 appearances (four starts) and a 1-3 record this year, Gant owns a 4.59 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP in 33.1 innings. Cant went two innings in his last appearance, giving up three hits and one earned.
It’s easy to find the big hitters on the Atlanta order. Freddie Freeman has put up 145 hits with 83 runs, 28 homers and 70 RBI. Nick Markakis has hit 136 times with 53 runs and 74 RBI. Adonis Garcia holds 114 hits with 49 runs and 47 RBI.
Over on the Phillies’ side, we’re getting another look at Vincent Velasquez on Saturday. In his 23 starts and 8-6 record this year, Velasquez holds a 4.21 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP in 124 innings. Velasquez took a no-decision against the Mets his last time out, with five innings, five hits and one earned.
The Phillies have a few notable hitters as well. Odubel Herrera has 137 hits with 68 runs and 42 RBI. Cesar Hernandez has hit 126 times with 52 runs and 34 RBI. Maikel Franco has 119 hits with 54 runs, 22 homers and 72 RBI.
The Braves are 8-3 in their last 11 game twos of a series, and 2-6 in their last eight Saturday games. Atlanta is also 2-5 in their last seven against the NL East and 5-1 in their last six overall.
As for the Phillies, they’re 4-9 in their last 13 game twos of a series, and 1-7 in Velasquez’s last eight starts. Philadelphia is also 1-7 in Velasquez’s last eight starts on grass, and 0-4 in Velasquez’s last four home starts.
There’s not much to get excited about here, but I’ll take the Braves and Gant over a shaky Velasquez here. Give me Atlanta.
