Petco Park and the San Diego Padres host the playoff hopeful Boston Red Sox Monday.
The Boston Red Sox are second in the American League East so every win or loss is huge. The Red Sox appeared ready to go on a run but their three game winning streak ended because their offense was ice cold which squandered an outstanding effort on the mound. Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez tossed a one hitter over eight frames before Craig Kimbrel was charged with an unearned run in the 9th to absorb the loss. The Red Sox were held to six hits and three free passes with Dustin Pedroia going 2-4. Drew Pomeranz opposes the Padres in interleague action on Monday. Pomeranz has gone 2-3 with the Red Sox in nine starts while posting a 1.31 WHIP and 4.08 ERA over 51 innings.

The San Diego Padres haven’t had much success in 2016 and the last few weeks have been a struggle. The struggles continued for another day in a 7-4 loss at the Dodgers Sunday which has the team staring at defeats in eight of eleven. Padres starter Christian Friedrich was charged with four runs before Kevin Quackenbush and Ryan Buchter allowed three runs. SD managed eight hits and a BB with Yangervis Solarte going 3-3 with a homer and three RBI’s while Travis Jankowski scored twice. Edwin Jackson toes the rubber for the first time against the Red Sox since 2014. Jackson has lost three in a row with 18 runs plated on 23 hits through 11.2 innings pitched.
The over is 7-1-1 in Boston’s last 9 on grass and is 6-1-1 in their last 8 overall while the Red Sox are 20-8 in their last 28 interleague games. The over is 8-2-1 in San Diego’s last 11 home games and is 7-2 in their last 9 Monday games while going 20-8-2 in their last 30 interleague games. I would expect to see some life from the Boston bats…
