The Cincinnati Reds have been tough at times but they have taken their share of lumps in a rebuilding year. The Reds had dropped seven of ten before downing the Pirates 8-6 Saturday. Cinci starter Robert Stephenson allowed four runs In three frames followed by two runs given up by Joshua Smith before three relievers held Pittsburgh in check. Cincinnati banged out 15 hits and walked twice with Joey Votto going deep and scoring twice while Tucker Barnhart drove in three runs. Cincinnati closes the series at PNC Park with Brandon Finnegan on the bump. Finnegan did not get a decision last time out in a 5-3 loss to the Mets with two runs given up in five innings.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are fighting to get above .500 but doing that and making the postseason are two different animals. The Pirates have now dropped consecutive contests and fallen further below the .500 mark which might spell the end of their postseason hopes. Buccos starter Drew Hutchison was charged with four runs on eight hits through four innings before Trevor Williams gave up three more in an inning. Pitt banged out ten hits and walked seven times with Jung Ho Kang going 3-4 with a homer and three RBI’s while Josh Harrison knocked in two. Ryan Vogelsong matches up with Cincinnati for the first time since last season. Vogelsong has struggled the past two times out with ten runs given up on eleven hits in 11.2 frames.
Cincinnati are 13-39 in their last 52 Sunday games and are 25-52 in their last 77 road games while the under is 7-3-2 in Finnegan’s last 12 road starts. Pittsburgh are 2-9 in their last 11 overall and are 2-9 in their last 11 games on grass while going 3-11 in their last 14 home games. Going out on a limb here…
