The Kansas City Royals look to shake off an ugly outing as they continue their home set against the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.
The Athletics continue to grind out some impressive victories in an otherwise disappointing season and after last night’s 8-0 defeat of the defending World Series champions they can take pride in basically putting an end to a potential repeat. Oakland will send Daniel Mengden to the hill here who has been disappointing since making his MLB debut and he will face off against Edinson Volquez who hasn’t had the greatest season but is always sitting on a potential gem at the front of the KC rotation. The A’s are 5-5 in their last 10 games but are 6-14 in their last 20 games on the road and haven’t had a ton of success away from home all season long and they have dropped four games in a row where Mengden is on the hill.

The Royals meanwhile head into this one sitting in the mix for an AL Wild Card spot but they are quickly running out of time and could be on the outside looking in after what has been a solid second half of the season. KC had an overhaul this season after winning the World Series last year as some pieces left via free agency and others have been on the shelf due to injury and will have to go back to the drawing board in the offseason. Kansas City does have a solid core intact and saw a breakout season from Danny Duffy that could be huge for them moving forward and while they don’t look like the same team this season they should be able to bring in some pieces in the offseason and get back in the picture as early as next year.
The Athletics are 3-7 in their last 10 games against a righty, 1-8 in their last nine during game four of a series, and 0-4 in Mengden’s last four starts while the Royals are 5-2 in their last seven Thursday games, 12-5 in their last 17 against a team with a losing record, and 17-7 in their last 24 against a righty. Oakland dominated on Wednesday but the Royals get one back here as they are desperate for a win and have a huge edge on the mound.
