The Oakland Athletics look to snap out of their ugly divisional slump as they take on the Texas Rangers in game one of a weekend set against their AL West rivals.
The A’s have had a disappointing season but will look to to build some momentum heading into the offseason as they take on the Texas Rangers in a divisional show down over the weekend that includes tonight’s series opener where they send Kendall Graveman to the hill to battle with Cole Hamels. Oakland will look to thrive in the underdog role for another game in what should be a very tough evening for them despite Graveman getting the ball as the Rangers have been among the best teams in baseball this season and had a very deep lineup that can beat you in a number of different ways. Oakland is 7-1 in Graveman’s last eight series openers so there is some clout to Oakland’s chances but Texas is out to move to closer to clinching the division and a win here will help them close the gap.

The Rangers are on a tear of late and have won four of their last five games and look like they will be in the mix to clinching top spot in the American League this season and a win here will help them move closer. Texas has a very solid line up and have looked like a World Series contender since opening day and with a 15-5 mark in their last 20 games against the AL West they are really beating down on the teams they need wins against the most and a pitching edge here should get them in a position to win again tonight.
The Athletics are 12-5 in Graveman’s last 17 starts, 0-4 in his last four against the AL West, and 9-3 in his last 12 games following a team loss while the Rangers are 45-19 in their last 64 home games, 19-3 in Hamels’ last 22 starts against a team with a losing record, and 5-1 in their last six overall. This looks like another Texas win as Hamels should get the best of Graveman and while the line is chalky I will lay the run line.
