The Minnesota Twins look to shake off a 9-2 thumping at home last night as they welcome another AL wild card contender in the Seattle Mariners to town on Friday.
The Mariners continue their pursuit of a wild card spot on the road as they begin a set with the hapless Twins after losing two of three to the Toronto Blue Jays this week and now face a pivotal set in Minneapolis. The M’s do have a playoff caliber roster and some pretty solid options in their rotation but they have been inconsistent this season and that could ultimately cost them a spot in the playoffs, but a favourable set against the Twins starting on Friday could push them closer. Seattle will start James Paxton in this one as he will face off against Kyle Gibson who will look to give the Twins just their fourth win in their last 11 games.

The Twins have had spurts of success this season but for the most part they have been underwhelming and need to address some big time holes in the offseason, beginning with their starting pitching. Minnesota does have some guys who can mash and Brian Dozier is having one heck of a second half as he has been hitting the ball out of the park it seems like on every at bat and if they can build around him moving forward they should be in good shape.
The Mariners are 6-0 in their last six road games, 1-4 in Paxton’s last five starts, and 9-3 in their last 12 against a righty while the Twins are 6-25 in their last 31 overall, 5-21 in their last 26 Friday games, and 5-15 in their last 20 home games. This is a simple call as the Mariners are the better team with the better pitcher and need to win to stay in the hunt for the playoffs.
