Taking the mound for the Yankees on Sunday will be RHP Michael Pineda. In his 30 starts and 6-11 record this year, Pineda holds a 4.89 ERA with a 1.35 WHIP in 165.2 innings. Pineda put up a no-decision against the Rays his last time out, going 5.1 innings with five hits and two earned.
By now we’re all familiar with the Yankees big hitters. Starlin Castro (who is currently battling a hamstring injury) has hit 153 times with 62 runs, 21 homers and 69 RBI. Didi Gregorius holds 148 hits with 65 runs and 67 RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury has hit 137 times with 67 runs and 52 RBI.
Over on the Blue Jays’ side, we’ll be seeing RHP Marco Estrada in the starting role. In his 27 starts and 9-9 record this year, Estrada owns a 3.62 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP in 164 innings. Estrada got a win against Seattle his last time out, going seven innings with one hit and no earned.
Toronto has some great hitters at their disposal. Josh Donaldson holds 157 hits with 119 runs, 36 homers and 96 RBI. Edwin Encarnacion has bagged 153 hits with 98 runs, 42 homers and 124 RBI. Kevin Pillar sits on 139 hits with 56 runs and 49 RBI.
The Yankees are 1-5 in their last six Sunday games, and 4-1 in Pineda’s last five starts versus the American League East. New York is also 8-3 in Pineda’s last 11 starts with four days’ rest, and 2-5 in Pineda’s last seven Sunday starts.
As for the Blue Jays, they’re 0-5 in their last five game threes of a series, and 8-1 in Estrada’s last nine Sunday starts. Toronto is also 0-4 in Estrada’s last four home starts, and 0-4 in Estrada’s last four starts with five days’ rest.
I’m going to pick the Yankees to get a surprise win here, as I think Pineda will be able to rein in the Toronto hitters if he can get some offensive backup.
