We have some NL Central action on tap Monday, as the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the Milwaukee Brewers to kick off a three game division set at Miller Park.
The Pittsburgh Pirates come into this one looking to bounce back after dropping three of their last four games, including a 7-1 loss to the Cubs on Sunday, handing the series win to Chicago. Jordy Mercer’s solo home run was the lone mark the Buccos would put on the scoreboard, while David Freese and Elias Diaz added base hits of their own. Pittsburgh mustered up just those three hits as a team in the losing effort. Jameson Taillon took the loss, falling to 3-2 this season after giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Gerrit Cole will start the series opener and is 4-6 with a 4.54 ERA and 69 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cole is 2-3 with a 3.42 ERA and 40 strikeouts against the Brewers.

The Milwaukee Brewers will look to keep their momentum going after winning five of their last six games, including a 2-1 win in their series finale against San Diego on Sunday, giving the Brew Crew the series victory. Hernan Perez and Manny Pina’s solo homers were enough to carry Milwaukee to victory. Eric Sogard went 2 for 3 with a double, while Travis Shaw, Keon Broxton, Lewis Brinson and even starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson added base hits of their own in the win. Speaking of Nelson, he was superb, throwing a complete game, giving up just one run on six hits while striking out ten to improve to 5-3 this season. Matt Garza will start game one, and is 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA and 37 strikeouts this season. In his career, Garza is 3-6 with a 4.14 ERA and 72 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgn is 7-14 in their last 21 road games and 5-3 in their last 8 games overall while the under is 5-1-1 in their last 7 games overall. Milwaukee is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall and 3-1 in their last 4 division games while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 games overall.
I’ve made some decent coin going against Cole, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do once again here. We are getting the division leading Brewers at even money in way better form. Sure, Pittsburgh may have a slight talent advantage on the mound, but the Pirates’ offense is asleep right now, and like I said, Cole has struggled for a chunk of this season. Give me Milwaukee.
