We have some interleague action on Monday, as the Cincinnati Reds head to the Trop to kick off a three game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Cincinnati Reds desperately need a win after being swept by the Dodgers over the weekend, including an 8-7 loss on Sunday, giving the Reds their 9th straight loss. Scooter Gennett led the team with three RBI, while going 1 for 4 with a home run. Adam Duvall and Eugenio Suarez each added solo homers while Scott Schebler and Billy Hamilton added RBIs of their own in the loss. Arismendy Alcantara added a double, while Patrick Kivlehan added a pinch-hit single in the losing effort for Cincinnati. Bronson Arroyo gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out three over just three innings of work, taking the loss to fall to 3-6 this season. Scott Feldman will start game one, and is 5-5 with a 4.29 ERA and 62 strikeouts this season. In his career, Feldman is 4-3 with a 3.05 ERA and 40 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
The Tampa Bay Rays will be looking to build on a pair of back-to-back wins to close out their series with Detroit, salvaging a series split against the Tigers following their 9-1 victory on Sunday. All of the Rays’ damage was done via the home run, with Logan Morrison hitting a pair of dingers with three RBI while Steven Souza Jr. hit a grand slam as part of his 2 for 4 day at the dish. Evan Longoria and Derek Norris each added a solo homer respectively in the win. Corey Dickerson went 3 for 4 at the plate, while Mallex Smith added a base hit of his own in the win. Jacob Faria gave up just the one run over seven innings of work, allowing six hits while striking out nine to improve to 3-0 this season. Jake Odorizzi will start game one for Tampa Bay and is 4-3 with a 3.77 ERA and 55 strikeouts this season. This will be Odorizzi’s first career start against Cincinnati. However in 15 career interleague starts, Odorizzi is 6-3 with a 3.12 ERA and 92 strikeouts.
Cincinnati is 0-6 in their last 6 road games and 0-9 in their last 9 games overall while the over is 6-2-1 in their last 9 games overall. Tampa Bay is 8-4 in their last 12 games overall and 5-1 in their last 6 home games while the over is 8-2-1 in their last 11 games overall.
It’s fair to say right now that Cincinnati has been one of the worst teams in the league over the last week or so, and I’m not ready to think that that will change on Monday. The Rays found their groove offensively over the weekend, and should be able to add to Cincinnati’s losing skid, pushing it to double digits with a Rays win here.
