The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Atlanta Braves face off in the finale of their three game weekend set on Sunday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to avoid the sweep after an 8-5 loss on Saturday in game two gave the D-Backs their seventh loss in their last eight games. Paul Goldschmidt led the way with a pair of runs on the board while David Peralta, Chris Owings and Daniel Descalso all added RBIs of their own in the win. Chris Herrmann went 1 for 5 with a double and A.J. Pollock went 2 for 3 while Jake Lamb, Brandon Drury and Ketel Marte added base hits in the losing effort for Arizona. Patrick Corbin gave up just two runs on six hits while striking out six over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Randall Delgado took the loss to fall to 1-2 this season after giving up four runs in the 6th inning. Zack Godley will start game three and is 3-3 with a 2.58 ERA and 65 strikeouts this season. In his career, Godley is 0-0 with a 12.60 ERA and 3 strikeouts against Atlanta.

The Atlanta Braves will go for the sweep after their win on Saturday. Lane Adams led the charge with three RBIs thanks to a pinch-hit, bases-clearing double in the 5th inning. Brandon Phillips went 3 for 5 with a homer, a double and a pair of RBIs while Jace Peterson added a solo home run of his own in the win. Ender Inciarte and Kurt Suzuki each put a run on the board as well, while Johan Camargo and Matt Kemp each put up a pair of base hits with Camargo added a double to the cause as well. Mike Foltynewicz gave up three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out six over 5.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Ian Krol ended up getting the win to improve to 2-2 this season while Jim Johnson notched his 21st save of the campaign. Jaime Garcia will start game three and is 2-7 with a 4.55 ERA and 74 strikeouts this season. In his career, Garcia is 5-1 with a 4.00 ERA and 27 strikeouts against Arizona.
Arizona is 1-7 in their last 8 games overall and 3-13 in their last 16 road games against a left-handed starter while the under is 3-0-1 in their last 4 games overall. Atlanta is 2-5 in Garcia’s last 7 starts and 13-5 in their last 8 games against the NL West while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record. Arizona is just 6-15 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams in Atlanta.
Sure, I’ll concede that Godley is probably the more reliable pitcher in this matchup. But the Diamondbacks are slumping big time right now, and Atlanta is still flying under the radar, playing some of the better baseball in the league at home right now. Not to mention that Garcia has had a lot of success in the past against Arizona. So with the way the series has looked so far, I’ll take the Braves to complete the sweep.
