The San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies will face off at Coors Field on Monday to kick off a three game division set.
The San Diego Padres will be looking to build on a pair of back-to-back wins that gave them a series victory over the Giants, including a 7-1 win in the series finale on Sunday. Hector Sanchez and Cory Spangenberg each went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, with Spangenberg’s other hit ending up as a triple. Erick Aybar went 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Jabari Blash matched that mark at the plate with a double of his own. Wil Myers, Jose Pirela, Allen Cordoba and even starting pitcher Trevor Cahill added base hits of their own in the win. Speaking of Cahill, he improved to 4-3 this season after giving up just the one run on eight hits while striking out eight over 6.2 innings of work. Luis Perdomo will start game one and is 4-4 with a 4.54 ERA and 69 strikeouts this season. In his career, Perdomo is 0-2 with a 5.32 ERA and 20 strikeouts against Colorado.
USA TODAY Sports
The Colorado Rockies come into this one looking to build on a 13-4 win in their series finale against the Mets on Sunday, preventing the Rockies from getting swept at Citi Field. Nolan Arenado and Gerardo Parra led the way with a pair of hits each, one of which being a home run with three RBIs apiece. Charlie Blackmon went 2 for 6 with a homer of his own, a double and a pair of RBIs. Ian Desmond and Trevor Story also added a double and two RBIs each while Mark Reynolds went 4 for 6 with a double and an RBI in the win. DJ LeMahieu also went 4 for 6 with a pair of two-baggers as the Rockies belted out 18 hits as a team. Jeff Hoffman improved to 6-1 this season, getting the win after giving up all four runs on seven hits while striking out three over six innings of work. German Marquez will start the opener for Colorado and is 6-4 with a 4.36 ERA and 67 strikeouts this season. In his career, Marquez is 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA and 11 strikeouts against the Padres.
San Diego is 4-1 in Perdomo’s last 5 starts and 2-8 in their last 10 division matchups while the under is 9-1 in their last 10 road games. Colorado is 1-6 in Marquez’s last 7 division starts and 1-10 in their last 11 matchups overall while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 home games. San Diego is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
San Diego really looked good in the last couple of games against the Giants, while Colorado, despite their blowout win on Sunday, have still struggled mightily before the break and in their first two games post-break. Neither of these teams have fared well within the division lately, but the Padres seem to rally behind Perdomo while Marquez hasn’t gotten much help against the NL West so I’ll take a stab with the Padres at plus money to draw first blood.
