One of the marquee matchups on Friday comes from Chase Field as the Washington Nationals take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in game one of a three game set.
The Washington Nationals will be looking to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the second half of the season, falling to the Angels by a final score of 7-0 in their series finale on Wednesday, snapping a six game winning streak. The Nats were being no-hit until Brian Goodwin’s double in the top of the 6th broke up the bid from Angels’ starter Alex Meyer, but it was the only hit Washington would put up in the loss. Gio Gonzalez took the loss, falling to 8-5 this season after giving up four runs on five hits while walking and striking out three apiece. Max Scherzer will get the nod in the series opener against his former team and is 11-5 with a 2.01 ERA and 183 strikeouts this season. In his career, Scherzer is 5-0 with a 2.41 ERA and 55 strikeouts against Arizona.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to get some momentum going after winning their series with the Reds thanks to a 12-2 win in the series finale on Thursday. Jake Lamb led the way by going 2 for 5 with a pair of three run home runs. Ketel Marte and Gregor Blanco each logged a two run homer with Blanco also adding a triple while A.J. Pollock added an RBI double and Daniel Descalso notched a sac fly RBI. Chris Iannetta went 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles while David Peralta added a pinch-hit single in the winning effort for the D-Backs. Patrick Corbin got the win to improve to 7-9 this season, giving up just one run on seven hits while striking out six over 7.1 innings of work. Zack Godley will start game one and is 3-4 with a 3.09 ERA and 74 strikeouts this season. In his career, Godley is 2-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 18 strikeouts against Washington.
Washington is 25-8 in Scherzer’s last 33 road starts and 6-1 in their last 7 games overall while the under is 9-1-1 in their last 11 games against the NL West. Arizona is 37-15 in their last 52 home games and 4-9 in their last 13 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL East. Washington is 5-0 in Scherzer’s last 5 starts against Arizona.
Arizona is too good of a team to be struggling the way they have been, and their series against Cincinnati proved that. The D-Backs will figure things out sooner rather than later, but I don’t think it’ll start just yet. Scherzer has owned Arizona in his career, and Washington has had the D-Backs’ number when they send Scherzer to the bump, so I’ll take the Nats to draw first blood on Friday.
