We have some NL Central division action on tap Friday, as the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Chicago Cubs to kick off a three game weekend set at Wrigley Field.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to bounce back after dropping their series finale against the Mets on Thursday by a final score of 3-2, earning the Cards a series split with New York. Tommy Pham accounted for both Cardinals’ runs in the loss, going 2 for 4 with an RBI double and a solo home run. Greg Garcia went 2 for 4 with a double of his own while Dexter Fowler and Eric Fryer each added a base hit of their own in the loss. Lance Lynn gave up just one run on three hits while striking out five over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Brett Cecil gave up the game-tying run for his 6th blown save of the year and Trevor Rosenthal got walked off, taking the loss to fall to 2-4 this season. Carlos Martinez will start the series opener and is 6-8 with a 3.36 ERA and 133 strikeouts this season. In his career, Martinez is 4-3 with a 4.16 ERA and 80 strikeouts against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will look to stay hot after winning their sixth straight game since the all-star break, remaining undefeated in the second half so far thanks to an 8-2 win over the Braves on Wednesday, completing their second straight series sweep. Javier Baez led the way by going 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and a team-high three RBIs. Addison Russell went a perfect 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs while Tommy La Stella and starting pitcher Mike Montgomery each went yard with a solo shot. Ian Happ notched an RBI of his own while Kris Bryant added a double while Jason Heyward and Jon Jay each chipped in a base hit in the win. Speaking of the aforementioned Montgomery, he got the win, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out five over six innings of work to improve to 2-6 this season. Jake Arrieta will get the start in game one and is 9-7 with a 4.17 ERA and 105 strikeouts this season. In his career, Arrieta is 8-3 with a 2.00 ERA and 97 strikeouts against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 0-5 in Martinez’s last 5 starts and 4-14 in their last 18 division matchups while the under is 7-1-1 in their last 9 games overall. Chicago is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall and 4-1 in Arrieta’s last 5 home starts while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 division matchups. Chicago is 6-1 in Arrieta’s last 7 home starts against St. Louis.
Normally, having Martinez on the mound would be a morale booster for St. Louis. The problem is that the Cardinals haven’t had any success lately with Martinez on the hill, and the Cubs come into this one white hot. Arrieta has had a lot of success at home, and has had even more success at home when he faces St. Louis. Gotta take the Cubs to keep their streak going here.
