The Milwaukee Brewers and the Philadelphia Phillies square off in game two of their three game weekend set on Saturday.
The Milwaukee Brewers could use a win after dropping their last six games, including a 6-1 loss to the Phillies in the series opener on Friday. Brett Phillips’ solo homer ended up being the lone run the Brew Crew would score in defeat. Domingo Santana went 2 for 4 while Jonathan Villar went 1 for 3 with a double and Eric Thames and even starting pitcher Matt Garza chipped in base hits in the losing effort as Milwaukee logged just six hits as a team. Speaking of Garza, he fell to 4-5 this season after giving up a pair of runs on three hits while walking three and striking out four over five innings of work. Brent Suter will start game two and is 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA and 27 strikeouts this season. This will be Suter’s first career start against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will be looking to build on their three game winning streak and four of their last five after their win in game one on Friday. Freddy Galvis went 1 for 4 with a two run homer as part of his three RBI day at the plate. Tommy Joseph added a pair of RBIs along with a double while Cesar Hernandez added a run on the board as well. Daniel Nava went 1 for 2 with a double while Nick Williams, Maikel Franco, Odubel Herrera, Andrew Knapp and Howie Kendrick each added base hits in the win. Aaron Nola got the win to improve to 7-6 this season after giving up the lone run on five hits while walking a pair and striking out nine over seven innings of work. Jeremy Hellickson will start game two and is 6-5 with a 4.44 ERA and 59 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hellickson is 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA and 22 strikeouts against Milwaukee.
Milwaukee is 0-6 in their last 6 games overall and 1-5 in Suter’s last 6 starts while the under is 4-0 in Suter’s last 4 road starts. Philadelphia is 1-6 in Hellickson’s last 7 starts and 1-4 in their last 5 home games against a left-handed starter while the under is 10-4-4 in Hellickson’s last 18 home starts. Milwaukee is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams.
The problem that I’m having is that we know Milwaukee is the better team, but they sure haven’t been playing like it as of late and who knows when they’ll turn it around. On the other hand it’s been a while since the Phillies have won four in a row. Then there’s the fact that neither team has had much success with their starter on the mound, and Hellickson left his last start with calf tightness. This is the definition of a coin flip, so I will side with the under, as neither offense has been anything to write home about, and it has also hit in the last three meetings between the two.
