The Detroit Tigers welcome the Kansas City Royals to Comerica Park in a Monday MLB baseball.
The Kansas City Royals have been surging the past week which has kept their postseason hopes alive. The Royals are right in the mix in the AL Central race but can’t afford a losing streak of any length and that hasn’t been a concern lately with the team winning five straight after a 5-4 decision versus the visiting White Sox on Sunday. KC starter Travis Wood was charged with all four runs on seven hits and a walk in 4.2 frames for a no decision before four relievers kept Chicago off the scoreboard. Kansas City posted eight hits and three walks with Eric Hosmer and Jorge Bonifacio smacking solo jacks while Whit Merrifield homered twice. The Kansas City Royals kick off their series at the Detroit with Jason Hammel on the bump for his second straight meeting with the Tigers. Hammel did not get a decision in a 4-3 win with a run scoring on four hits and a base on balls over 6.1 frames.

The Detroit Tigers have been fading and the Wild Card is also slipping away as well. The Tigers aren’t the big time offense they once were but they looked like it Sunday in a 9-6 victory at the Minnesota Twins. Detroit starter Matthew Boyd looked good with three runs given up on four hits and a trio of free passes through six innings before Bruce Rondon and Justin Wilson allowed three runs. The Tigers racked up 16 hits and five bases on balls with Jose Iglesias going 3-5 with a homer, three RBI’s and two runs while Ian Kinsler and Alex Pressley each had three hits and combined for three RBI’s and three runs. Justin Verlander toes the rubber for the Detroit Tigers in a rematch of his last outing at the Kansas City Royals. Verlander did not get a decision in a 4-3 defeat where he gave up a pair of runs on six hits while striking out eight over seven innings pitched.
Kansas City are 5-0 in their last 5 overall and Kansas City are 4-0 in their last 4 games versus a right hander while Kansas City are 1-4 in Hammel’s last 5 starts. The over is 6-2 in Detroit last 8 overall and the over is 6-2 in Detroit last 8 on grass while the under is 11-4 in Detroit last 15 Monday games. The under is 4-0-1 in Verlander’s last 5 starts versus Kansas City.
I think the price is a bit steep for Verlander who is past his prime but he is still a decent hurler…
