The Los Angeles Angels and the Cleveland Indians meet on Tuesday in game one of a three game set from Progressive Field.
The Los Angeles Angels come into this one looking to build on a pair of back-to-back wins to close out their series against the Red Sox over the weekend, including a 3-2 win in the series finale on Sunday. All of the Angels’ damage was done via the long ball, with Mike Trout, Andrelton Simmons and Luis Valbuena each cranking out solo homers in the win, with Simmons going 2 for 4 at the dish. C.J. Cron added a base hit of his own as the Halos mustered up just five hits as a team in the win. Parker Bridwell improved to 4-1 this season, getting the win after giving up both runs on five hits while striking out three over seven innings of work. Bud Norris recorded a scoreless 9th for his 15th save of the season. Jesse Chavez will start game one and is 5-10 with a 4.88 ERA and 83 strikeouts this season. In his career, Chavez is 1-1 with a 5.95 ERA and 13 strikeouts against Cleveland.

The Cleveland Indians will look to stay hot after winning their fourth straight game on Monday, a 6-2 win over the Reds that was a makeup game from a rainout earlier this season. Carlos Santana led the way, going 2 for 3 with a pair of solo homers while Bradley Zimmer went 2 for 3 as well with a double and two RBIs as well. Roberto Perez went 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI while Michael Brantley chipped in a run on the board in the winning effort for the Tribe. Edwin Encarnacion added a two-bagger of his own, while Francisco Lindor and Abraham Almonte added base hits in the win for Cleveland. Josh Tomlin got the win, improving to 7-5 this season after giving up both runs on four hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Mike Clevinger will start game one for the Tribe and is 5-3 with a 2.73 ERA and 73 strikeouts this season. In his career, Clevinger is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 3 strikeouts against the Angels.
Los Angeles is 0-4 in Chavez’s last 4 starts and 2-5 in their last 7 road games while the under is 12-3-2 in their last 17 games against a right-handed starter. Cleveland is 1-4 in Clevinger’s last 5 home starts and 18-7 in their last 25 against the AL West while the over is 5-2-1 in their last 8 games overall. Los Angeles is 0-7 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Cleveland.
Although the Angels pair of wins over the Red Sox were impressive, we still have a pair of starting pitchers trending in different directions. Chavez is 0-4 in his last seven starts while Clevinger is 3-0 in his last six starts, including back-to-back shutouts over his last two starts, covering 12 innings. Add in the fat that the Angels have had no success in Cleveland as of late, and I like Cleveland to draw first blood behind a strong outing from Clevinger here.
