The Cincinnati Reds take on the New York Yankees in game one of their three game interleague set at Yankee Stadium starting on Tuesday.
The Cincinnati Reds will look to bounce back after dropping a makeup game to the Cleveland Indians by a final score of 6-2 on Monday, giving the Reds their ninth loss in their last eleven games. Zack Cozart and Scooter Gennett each logged a solo home run, accounting for both Cincinnati Reds in the loss. Billy Hamilton, Joey Votto and Devin Mesoraco each chipped in base hits of their own in the losing effort as the Reds put up just five hits as a team. Tim Adleman took the loss, falling to 5-8 this season after giving up five runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four over six innings of work. Luis Castillo will start game one and is 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 43 strikeouts this season. This will be Castillo’s first career start against the Yankees and first career interleague start.
USA TODAY Sports
The New York Yankees come into this one looking to keep their momentum going after winning four of their last six games, including a 6-4 win in their series finale against the Mariners on Sunday. Didi Gregorius hit a pair of solo homers while Brett Gardner also put up a pair of RBIs while going 2 for 5 with a homer. Clint Frazier went 1 for 5 with a double and two RBIs of his own to round out the Yankees’ scoring output on Sunday. Chase Headley went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles while Tyler Wade added a double of his own and Todd Frazier along with Ronald Torreyes, added base hits of their own as well in the winning effort for the Yanks. Caleb Smith gave up all four runs on five hits while striking out a pair over 3.2 innings, not factoring in the decision. Chad Green got the win to improve to 1-0 this season while the Yankees’ three headed monster out of the bullpen closed the door, with Dellin Betances closing the 7th, David Robertson in the 8th, and Aroldis Chapman turning off the lights in the 9th for his 11th save of the year. Jordan Montgomery will start game one and is 6-5 with a 4.09 ERA and 93 strikeouts this season. This will be Montgomery’s first career start against the Reds, however in his career, Montgomery owns a 1-1 interleague record with a 3.18 ERA and 12 strikeouts over three career starts.
Cincinnati is 2-8 in their last 10 games overall and 18-39 in their last 57 against the AL East while the under is 6-0-1 in their last 7 road games. New York is 0-4 in Montgomery’s last 4 starts and 5-1 in their last 6 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games overall. Cincinnati is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
This line is a tad thick for my liking, as New York has taken a step back in the division but are right in the thick of things in the standings. Cincinnati has taken a nosedive since starting the season well, and are in far worse form than the Yanks right now so I’ll take New York here for a series opening win.
