Out at Petco Park on Wednesday, the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres will be continuing their MLB series.
In Monday’s opener, the Mets bagged a 5-3 victory. On Tuesday, the Mets scored twice in the fifth and twice in the seventh to eke out a 6-5 win.

For the Wednesday game, the Mets will be bringing out LHP Steven Matz. In his 44.1 innings and 2-3 record this year, Matz has a 4.67 ERA with 30 Ks and 11 BBs.
The Mets have a few key bats this year. Coming into Tuesday, Jay Bruce had 96 hits, 55 runs, 25 homers and 67 RBI, while Miguel Conforto had 79 hits, 55 runs, 19 homers and 52 RBI in that span. Bruce posted a hit with a run on Tuesday.
Over on the Padres’ side, they’re going with RHP Joules Chacin on Wednesday. In his 114.0 innings and 9-7 record this year, Chacin has a 4.26 ERA with 96 Ks and 40 BBs.
San Diego has a few key hitters as well. Coming into Tuesday, Wil Myers brought 91 hits, 53 runs, 20 homers and 47 RBI, while Hunter Renfroe had 78 hits, 39 runs, 19 homers and 43 RBI. In Tuesday’s game, Myers had an RBI while Renfroe managed a solo homer.
The Mets are 4-1 in their last five Wednesday games, and 1-4 in their last five during game three of a series. New York is also 2-5 in Matz’s last seven starts, and 2-6 in Matz’s last eight starts with four days’ rest.
Meanwhile, the Padres are 4-1 in their last five Wednesday games and 1-4 in their last five during game three of a series. San Diego is also 6-13 in their last 19 games versus a left-handed starter and 1-6 in their last seven games versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.
In two starts against the Cardinals and Rockies, Matz gave up 12 earned in a span of 5.1 innings. In his most recent start he did a little better with three earned on nine hits in 5.0 innings. I’m not entirely sure Matz can keep the Padres at bay here, so I’ll take San Diego for the victory.
