Out at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees will be kicking off their MLB series.
The Rays are coming off a series versus the Orioles. The two teams split the first pair of games, then on Wednesday, Tampa bagged a five-run win, scoring everything in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
USA TODAY Sports
For Thursday’s game, the Rays will be bringing out RHP Chris Archer. In his 136.0 innings and 7-6 record this year, Archer has a 3.77 ERA with 167 Ks and 44 BBs.
Tampa has some standout bats this year. Chris Dickerson came into Wednesday with 117 hits, 62 runs, 18 homers and 43 RBI, while Evan Longoria had 104 hits, 51 runs, 14 homers and 59 RBI. Longoria ripped a two-run homer on Wednesday with three hits and two runs; Dickerson plated a run.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they just finished off a pair against the Reds. New York won the first game 4-2, then on Wednesday the Yankees used a five-run seventh to secure a 9-5 victory.
New York is set to go with lefty CC Sabathia on Thursday. In his 89.0 innings and 9-3 record this year, Sabathia has a 3.44 ERA with 71 Ks.
The Yankees have some well-known hitters this season. Aaron Judge came into Wednesday with 106 hits, 80 runs, 32 homers and 73 RBI. Starlin Castro, who is injured, is second on the team with 97 hits, 52 runs, 12 homers and 45 RBI. Judge had the day off on Wednesday.
The Rays are 6-2 in their last eight during game one of a series, and 5-0 in Archer’s last five starts with four days’ rest. Tampa is also 8-3 in Tampa’s last 11 Thursday’s starts, and 4-11 in Archer’s last 4-11 in Archer’s last 15 starts during game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the under is 15-6-3 in Yankee’s last 24 Thursday games, and the over is 19-9-1 in New York’s last 29 versus the AL East. New York is also 5-1 in their last six overall, and 5-0 in their last five games versus a right-handed starter.
Archer has five straight quality starts to his credit and has allowed just three earned in 13.0 innings over his last two starts. As for Sabathia, he’s won two of his three starts since he came off the DL early this month. This should be a great matchup on both sides of the ball and a fun one to watch. This one could go either way, but I like Archer to stay strong here and put the Rays in position to get a road win. I’ll take Tampa in a close game.
