The Atlanta Braves are second in the National League East but their goal is to get to .500 and beyond. The Philadelphia Phillies have nowhere to go in 2017 but beating the Atlanta Braves is more then just a win. The Phillies are not known for scoring runs in bunches but that’s what we saw Friday with the bonus of a great performance on the mound. Phils starter Jake Thompson tossed a five hit shutout through five innings to get the win although the pen was a bit shaky. Philadelphia hammered out 12 hits walked twice with Cameron Rupp going solo and scoring twice while Tommy Joseph smacked a three run jack followed by Aaron Altherr clubbed a pair of solo bombs. The Philadelphia Phillies give Saturday’s starting assignment to Jered Eickhoff who sees the Atlanta Braves for the third time in 2017. Eickhoff comes off of a 6-3 win versus the Milwaukee Brewers with two runs scoring on three hits and two walks in six frames.
Atlanta are 1-4 in their last 5 road games and Atlanta are 1-4 in their last 5 overall while Atlanta are 0-4 in Newcomb’s last 4 starts. Philadelphia are 6-13 in their last 19 home games and Philadelphia are 24-55 in their last 79 overall while Philadelphia are 3-10 in Eickhoff’s last 13 starts. Atlanta are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings in Philadelphia.
I think the Phillies have a reasonable chance of winning so something small on them…
