In Saturday’s game, the Astros will be going with RHP Lance McCullers. In his 100.2 innings and 7-2 record this year, McCullers has a 3.67 ERA with 114 Ks and 32 BBs.
Houston has some big hitters this year. Jose Altuve came into the weekend with 144 hits, 74 runs, 15 homers and 59 RBI, while George Springer had 114 hits, 82 runs, 27 homers and 66 RBI. Altuve whiffed 0-for-4 on Saturday; Springer hit the 10-day DL this week.
Over on the Detroit side, they’re going with RHP Justin Verlander in the start Sunday. In his 124.0 innings and 5-7 record this year, Verlander has a 4.50 ERA with 120 Ks and 57 BBs.
Detroit has a few noteworthy bats as well. Nick Castellanos came into the weekend with 95 hits, 50 runs, 15 homers and 57 RBI while Justin Upton had 95 hits, 59 runs, 16 homers and 61 RBI. On Saturday, Castellanos logged a run, as did Upton.
The Astros are 4-1 in their last five Sunday games, and 1-4 in their last five during game three of a series. Houston is also 5-2 in McCullers’ last seven road starts and 0-4 in McCullers’ last four starts.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 4-1 in their last five Sunday games and 17-8 in Verlander’s last 25 home starts. Detroit is also 5-17 in Verlander’s last 22 Sunday starts and 1-4 in Verlander’s last five starts with five days’ rest.
It’s been a rough stretch of games for McCullers. In his last three starts, he’s given up a total of 15 earned in 13.2 innings. As for Verlander, He’s been pretty solid since coughing up seven earned against the Indians, with eight earned over four starts. Even with that big offense behind him, I can’t really trust McCullers right now. This looks like a good spot for a Tigers win.
