The Minnesota Twins and the Oakland A’s square off on Sunday in the series finale of their three game weekend set.
The Minnesota Twins come into this one looking to take the rubber match after letting Oakland even up the series, falling to the A’s by a final score of 5-4 on Saturday. Miguel Sano and Zack Granite each put in a pair of RBIs to round out the Twins’ offensive output, with Sano going 1 for 5 with a homer while Granite went 2 for 4 at the dish. Eddie Rosario and Jason Castro each pitched in a double while Brian Dozier, Max Kepler, Eduardo Escobar and Robbie Grossman each contributed a base hit in defeat. Adalberto Mejia gave up a pair of runs on eight hits while walking and striking out a pair apiece over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Taylor Rogers gave up the game-tying and game-deciding runs in the 9th for his 3rd blown save of the year, also taking the loss to fall to 5-3 this season. Bartolo Colon will start the finale and is 2-9 with a 8.00 ERA and 47 strikeouts this season. In his career, Colon is 9-6 with a 3.37 ERA and 90 strikeouts against Oakland.

The Oakland A’s will look to build on their game two victory on Saturday that snapped a five game losing streak. Rajai Davis was the star of the show, going 4 for 5 with a homer, a double and a pair of RBIs. Matt Chapman added a solo homer while Ryon Healy went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI of his own. Yonder Alonso added a run on the board while Marcus Semien, Jed Lowrie and Jaycob Brugman chipped in base hits as well in the win. Chris Smith gave up all four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Daniel Coulombe became the pitcher of record, taking the win to improve his record to 2-1 this season. Jharel Cotton will start game three and is 5-8 with a 5.17 ERA and 67 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cotton is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 9 strikeouts against the Twins.
Minnesota is 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 1-4 in their last 5 road games against a right-handed starter while the over is 4-0-2 in their last 6 games overall. Oakland is 2-6 in Cotton’s last 8 starts and 6-1 in their last 7 against the AL Central while the over is 8-3 in their last 11 games following a win. Minnesota is 4-17 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams in Oakland.
I know the Twins are struggling and Bartolo Colon has been a disaster for most of the season. But are we really going to give this kind of juice to an Oakland team that’s lost seven of their last nine? Cotton gave up four earned and took the loss in his last start against the lowly White Sox who have given up on the year and that start was four weeks ago. Minnesota still has plenty to fight for, so I think they rally behind Colon again and get the win with the big plus money.
