We have some NL Central action on tap Tuesday as the Cincinnati Reds kick off a three game division set against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Cincinnati Reds will look to build on a 6-4 win in their series finale against the Marlins, snapping a six game losing streak while avoiding the sweep in the process. Tucker Barnhart led the way going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Jose Peraza went 2 for 3 with an RBI of his own while Adam Duvall and starting pitcher Luis Castillo put runs on the board as well. Billy Hamilton, Scooter Gennett, Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez contributed base hits in the win for the Reds as well. Luis Castillo had his best start in his rookie season, going eight strong, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out six, getting the win to improve to 2-4 this season. Homer Bailey will start the opener and is 2-5 with an 8.37 ERA and 20 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bailey is 8-6 with a 3.58 ERA and 108 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to build on a skid-snapping win over their own, defeating the Padres 7-1 in their series finale on Sunday to snap a four game losing streak. Andrew McCutchen stole the show, going three for three with a trio of solo home runs to lead the way. Jose Osuna went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIss while Jordy Mercer went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Josh Bell added an RBI of his own in the win. Starling Marte, David Freese and starting pitcher Gerrit Cole chipped in hits of their own in the winning effort for the Buccos. Speaking of Cole, he improved to 9-7 this season, giving up just one run on five hits while walking a pair and striking out eight over seven innings of work. Jameson Taillon will start game one and is 6-4 with a 4.03 ERA and 73 strikeouts this season. In his career, Taillon is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA and 18 strikeouts against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is 4-17 in their last 21 road games against a team with a losing record and 1-9 in Bailey's last 10 division starts while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Pittsburgh is 5-0 in their last 5 division matchups and 2-6 in their last 8 home games against a team with a losing record while the under is 20-5-2 in their last 27 home games. Cincinnati is 0-7 in Bailey's last 7 starts against Pittsburgh.
As if Bailey weren’t hard to trust already, giving up five or more earned runs in four of his seven starts this season, he has had zero success in the last couple of years against Pittsburgh. The Pirates haven’t been playing much better, but they were able to stifle a red hot Padres’ offense in the series finale and I think that confidence could carry over to a win on Tuesday.
