The Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals face off in game one of a four game set at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday.
The Seattle Mariners will look to bounce back after failing to complete the sweep of the Rangers, thanks in part to a 5-1 loss in the series finale on Wednesday, snapping a four game winning streak in the process. Robinson Cano went 2 for 3 with the M’s lone RBI in the contest, while Guillermo Heredia went 2 for 4 with a double. Nelson Cruz and Danny Valencia each added base hits as the four Mariners combined for the team’s six base hits in the loss. Ariel Miranda took the loss, falling to 7-5 this season after giving up all five runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out five over 5.2 innings of work. Yovani Gallardo will start game one and is 5-7 with a 5.34 ERA and 72 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gallardo is 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA and 13 strikeouts against Kansas City.

The Kansas City Royals will look to rebound after being swept by Baltimore, following a 6-0 shutout loss in their series finale on Wednesday. Eric Hosmer went 1 for 4 with a double while Whit Merrifield, Melky Cabrera, Jorge Bonifacio and Alcides Escobar each added a base hit as the Royals mustered up just five hits as a team in the loss. Jason Vargas took the loss, falling to 13-5 on the year after giving up three runs on four hits while walking a pair and striking out six over five innings of work. Trevor Cahill will start the series opener and is 4-3 with a 4.15 ERA and 74 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cahill is 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA and 49 strikeouts against Seattle.
Seattle is 8-1 in their last 9 road games and 7-3 in their last 10 games against the AL Central while the over is 4-1-1 in Gallardo’s last 6 starts overall. Kansas City is 10-3 in their last 13 games overall and 8-2 in their last 10 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 5-1-1 in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record. Seattle is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
This should be an interesting matchup on Thursday, which is probably a good one to just watch considering the volatile pitching matchup. However, for the sake of the pick, Gallardo’s struggles on the road have been well documented, while Cahill has given up five runs in back-to-back starts, covering a combined 7.2 innings of work. I think Cahill is still trying to adjust to being back in the AL, and I can’t see Gallardo turning things around here, so I’ll take the over in a game that could easily top double digits by the 5th or 6th inning.
