The San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in game two of their three game weekend set from PNC Park.
The San Diego Padres will look to even up the series after dropping three of their last four games following a 10-6 loss in the series opener on Friday. Carlos Asuaje led the way, going 2 for 4 with a double and a two-run homer. Yangervis Solarte, Cory Spangenberg and Manuel Margot each put up a pair of base hits and an RBI in the loss, while Austin Hedges added a base hit of his own in the losing effort. Travis Wood gave up four runs on six hits while walking a pair and striking out five over five innings of work. Kirby Yates allowed a six spot in the bottom of the 7th, notching his 2nd blown save of the year while taking the loss to fall to 2-2 this season. Dinelson Lamet will start game two and is 5-4 with a 5.62 ERA and 75 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lamet is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 7 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to build on their series-opening win on Friday when they take on the Padres Saturday. Gregory Polanco and Josh Harrison each logged three RBIs, with Polanco hitting the eventual game-winning, three-run pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the 8th. Adam Frazier added a sac fly RBI and an RBI single for his two runs on the board while David Freese added a double and a solo homer to round out the Pirates’ output on the board. Francisco Cervelli and Jordy Mercer each recorded a pair of base hits while Andrew McCutchen, Jose Osuna and Josh Bell added a base hit respectively in the win. Ivan Nova gave up four runs, one earned, on six hits while walking a pair and striking out five over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. A.J. Schugel got the win, improving his record to 2-0 this season. Gerrit Cole will start game two and is 9-7 with a 3.97 ERA and 120 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cole is 4-1 with a 1.47 ERA and 38 strikeouts against San Diego.
San Diego is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall and 5-2 in Lamet’s last 7 starts while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record. Pittsburgh is 17-5 in Cole’s last 22 starts against the NL West and 6-2 in their last 8 home games while the under is 20-5-1 in their last 26 home games. Pittsburgh is 4-0 in Cole’s last 4 starts against San Diego.
The Padres were playing well as of late, but have regressed lately, including that 6-run 7th inning in Friday’s loss while Pittsburgh is slowly starting the climb back to .500. Cole has seemed to turn the corner, giving up two runs or less in his last five starts and in eight of his last nine, and he also owns a solid record with an ERA well under two against San Diego, so I think he adds another one to the list here as Cole leads the Pirates to victory.
