USA TODAY Sports
For the Wednesday matchup, the Phillies will be trotting out RHP Jerad Eickhoff. Over his 104.2 innings and 2-7 record this year, Eickhoff has a 4.56 ERA with 95 Ks and 44 BBs.
The Phillies have some noteworthy batters this year. Coming into this set, Odubel Herrera led the way on 113 hits, 47 runs, 11 homers and 41 RBI, while Freddy Galvis had 104 hits, 44 runs, 11 homers and 47 RBI. On Tuesday, Herrera ripped a homer with three hits, two runs and two RBI; Galvis had two hits and a run.
Lefty Sean Newcomb will be taking the mound for the Braves on Wednesday. In his 52.2 innings and 1-6 record this year, Newcomb has a 4.61 ERA with 55 Ks and 32 BBs.
Atlanta has some solid bats as well. Ender Inciarte led the way coming in with 139 hits, 72 runs and 40 RBI while Nick Markakis had 114 hits, 53 runs and 54 RBI. On Tuesday, Markakis managed a run; Inciarte had one hit.
The Phillies are 18-39 in their last 57 during game two of a series, and 4-14 in their last 18 Wednesday games. Philadelphia is also 5-14 in Eickhoff’s last 19 starts and 7-22 in Eickhoff’s last 29 road starts.
Meanwhile, the Braves are 4-1 in their last five during game two of a series, and 1-4 in their last five Wednesday games. Atlanta is also 1-5 in Newcomb’s last six home starts and 0-6 in Newcomb’s last six starts overall.
Lately, Eickhoff has been pretty solid. In his last three, he’s given up a total of six earned on 11 hits in 17.0 innings. As for Newcomb, he’s been okay with seven earned on nine hits over three starts (15.2 innings). That said, Newcomb hasn’t recorded a win since June 27, as he’s either had a meltdown or been betrayed by the bullpen. There’s not a whole lot to like about this matchup, but I think Eickhoff and the Phillies have a slight edge.
