The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Detroit Tigers face off in game three of their four game home-and-home interleague set on Wednesday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to keep the ball rolling after winning three straight and five of their last six games following a 6-3 win in game two on Tuesday. Starting pitcher Chad Kuhl helped his own caused by leading the team with a pair of RBIs while Andrew McCutchen hit a solo homer and Jordy Mercer went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Starling Marte and David Freese each added an RBI to the cause while Francisco Cervelli and Josh Harrison added base hits of their own in the win. Speaking of Kuhl, he got the win to improve to 5-7 this season, giving up all three runs on five hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Felipe Rivero threw a scoreless 9th with a strikeout for his 10th save of the season. Ivan Nova will start game three and is 10-8 with a 3.66 ERA and 89 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nova is 0-2 with a 6.66 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Detroit.
USA TODAY Sports
The Detroit Tigers could use a win to snap a four game losing streak after being handed the loss in game two on Tuesday. Jim Adduci led the team by going 1 for 4 with an RBI double while Miguel Cabrera notched an RBI of his own by way of a sac fly. Mikie Mahtook went 2 for 3 while Jeimer Candelario and Ian Kinsler added base hits in the losing effort for the Tigers. Matthew Boyd took the loss, giving up all six runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out five over four innings of work, falling to 5-6 this season. Justin Verlander will start game three and is 7-7 with a 4.20 ERA and 136 strikeouts this season. In his career, Verlander is 4-2 with a 4.15 ERA and 43 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 1-5 in Nova’s last 6 road starts and 14-6 in their last 20 against the AL Central while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 road games. Detroit is 21-7 in Verlander’s last 28 interleague starts and 2-5 in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. The over is 4-0 in Verlander’s last 4 starts against Pittsburgh.
Nova seems to have rebounded from his implosion a couple starts back, giving up just one run in his last outing. However Nova hasn’t really had any success against the Tigers in his career. Verlander has been good recently as well, giving up just two earned over his last two starts, but the separator here is that Verlander has been flat out dominant in interleague play in his career, owning a lifetime 28-5 record with an ERA just over three. That’s enough of a sample size to push me towards the Tigers here to get on the board with a win.
