The Detroit Tigers host the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday in MLB baseball at Comerica Park.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have been playing well and need to continue to win to stay alive in the NL Central race. The Pirates were looking good with wins in five of six before getting hammered 10-0 on Wednesday night. Nothing went favorably for the Buccos as starter Ivan Nova was charged with six runs on ten hits and two walks over 6.1 frames to fall to 10-9 while Daniel Hudson allowed four runs (three earned) in just 1/3 of an inning. Pittsburgh was held to three hits and a trio of bases on balls with Josh Bell going 2-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk. The Pittsburgh Pirates have slated Gerrit Cole as Thursday’s starter at the Detroit Tigers who he last faced in 2016. Cole comes off of a 5-2 loss to the visiting San Diego Padres with three runs given up on eight hits and a pair of walks in six frames.

The Detroit Tigers are looking at 2018 and what their lineup might be with a few players vying for roster spots. The Tigers ended a four game slide in fashion in a one sided rout of the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. Everything clicked for Detroit with starter Justin Verlander looking like the ace of several years ago with one hit and three bases on balls allowed through eight innings pitched to up his record to 8-7. The Tigers racked up 14 hits and four walks with Ian Kinsler going 3-4 with a homer, four RBI’s and four runs while Nicholas Castellanos logged three hits and knocked in five. The Detroit Tigers will be giving right hander Drew VerHagen his second start of the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates in town on Thursday. VerHagen comes off of a 5-2 loss at Baltimore (ND) with two runs given up on four hits and two BB in five frames.
The under is 18-7-1 in PIT last 26 Thursday games and the under is 35-14-2 in Pittsburgh last 51 on grass while the under is 35-14-2 in Pittsburgh last 51 overall. The over is 8-2 in Detroit last 10 Thursday games and Detroit are 3-8 in their last 11 interleague games. The over is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.
If the Pirates can shake off Wednesday’s lackluster performance I think Cole can control the scoreboard…
