USA TODAY Sports
For the Thursday opener, the Orioles will be going with LHP Wade Miley. In his 114.1 innings and 5-9 record this year, Miley has a 5.51 ERA with 101 Ks and 66 BBs.
Baltimore has a few big bats this year. Johnathan Schoop entered Wednesday with 127 hits, 70 runs, 25 homers and 82 RBI, while Adam Jones had 118 hits, 62 runs, 20 homers and 54 RBI. In the Wednesday game, Schoop posted a hit but Jones went 0-for-4.
As for the A’s, they just finished up against the Mariners in a two-game set. Oakland lost 7-6 on Tuesday, then in the Wednesday game Oakland fell 6-3.
Oakland will be trotting out RHP Chris Smith for the start on Thursday. In his 28.0 innings and 0-1 record this year, Smith has a 4.82 ERA with 16 Ks and 11 BBs.
Oakland has some notable hitters as well. Jed Lowrie led the way coming into Wednesday with his 109 hits, 59 runs, 10 homers and 36 RBI, while Ryon Healy had 106 hits, 47 runs, 21 homers and 63 RBI. On Wednesday, Healy came up empty but Lowrie had a hit and an RBI.
The Orioles are 5-11 in their last 16 during game one of a series, and 2-5 in their last seven Thursday games. Baltimore is also 2-5 in Miley’s last seven road starts and 4-1 in Miley’s last five starts on grass.
Meanwhile, the A’s are 17-40 in their last 57 during game one of a series, and 3-8 in their last 11 games versus a left-handed starter. Oakland is also 1-4 in their last five Thursday games and 1-4 in their last five home games versus a left-handed starter.
After a sketchy run of 17 earned in three starts, Miley has calmed down with four earned on eight hits over his last two starts, a span of 10.0 innings. As for Smith, he’s given up eight earned on 12 hits over his last 9.0 innings. There’s honestly not a whole lot to like about the pitching matchup here, but between the two I like Miley a little better. Give me the Orioles.
