The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies square off on Thursday in game one of a four game NL East weekend set.
The New York Mets could definitely use a win after dropping 10 of their last 13 games following a 5-1 loss in the series finale against the Rangers on Wednesday, settling for a split of their two game interleague set. Wilmer Flores hit a solo shot to put the lone Mets run on the board, while Jose Reyes and Amed Rosario put up a base hit each as the Mets mustered up just three hits as a team in the loss. Rafael Montero took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five over three innings of work to fall to 1-8 this season. Jacob DeGrom will start the series opener and is 12-5 with a 3.36 ERA and 170 strikeouts this season. In his career, DeGrom is 5-0 with a 2.34 ERA and 59 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to build on their current three game winning streak after completing the mini two-game sweep of the Braves by a final score of 3-2 on Wednesday. Odubel Herrera and Freddy Galvis each went 2 for 4 with an RBI with Herrera adding a triple and Galvis adding a double to the winning cause. Cesar Hernandez added a double of his own as the Phils put up just five hits as a team in the winning effort. Jerad Eickhoff got the win after giving up both runs on nine hits while striking out 6 over 6.2 innings of work to improve to 3-7 this season. The Phillies bullpen was near perfect the rest of the way, their only blip being a 9th inning walk from closer Hector Neris, however Neris closed the door en route to his 13th save of the season. Vince Velasquez will start game one and is 2-6 with a 4.82 ERA and 67 strikeouts this season. In his career, Velasquez is 1-2 with a 3.76 ERA and 29 strikeouts against the Mets.
New York is 4-0 in DeGrom’s last 4 division starts and 1-5 in their last 6 games overall while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 road games. Philadelphia is 6-17 in Velasquez’s last 23 starts and 7-0 in their last 7 division matchups while the under is 31-15-7 in their last 53 games overall. New York is 9-0 in DeGrom’s last 9 starts against Philadelphia.
The Phillies are starting to string wins together now that they’re realizing the season is lost, and they could play spoiler down the stretch. I’m not sure that their streak will continue on Thursday, as DeGrom has been nothing but money against the Phillies in his career. The problem for the Mets however, is that they just traded their leading home run hitter away so I’m not sure where the offense will come from as the Mets are struggling to put runs on the board as it is. Therefore, I’m going to back the under as I can’t see two anemic offenses going over the total.
