The Atlanta Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals face off in game one of a three game weekend set in MLB action on Friday.
The Atlanta Braves come into this one looking to snap a three game losing streak after being swept in a mini two-game set with the Phillies, including dropping the finale by a final score of 3-2 on Wednesday. Danny Santana put up a pinch-hit, two RBI single, while Nick Markakis went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and Ozzie Albies added a two-bagger of his own in the loss. Tyler Flowers went 2 for 4 while Freddie Freeman, Brandon Phillips and starting pitcher Sean Newcomb added base hits respectively in the loss. Speaking of Newcomb, he gave up all three runs on five hits while striking out six over six innings of work, taking the loss to fall to 1-7 this season. Mike Foltynewicz will start game one and is 10-6 with a 3.94 ERA and 115 strikeouts this season. In his career, Foltynewicz is 1-1 with a 7.20 ERA and 8 strikeouts against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to build on their six game winning streak following a come from behind 8-6 win over the Royals, completing the four game sweep of Kansas City. Dexter Fowler stole the show, going 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong each had a pair of base hits, including a double and an RBI respectively, while Matt Carpenter and Tommy Pham added base hits of their own in the win. Lance Lynn gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits while walking five and striking out three, not factoring in the decision. Tyler Lyons got the win to improve to 1-0 this season, while Trevor Rosenthal notched his 10th save of the year by tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Adam Wainwright will start game one and is 11-5 with a 5.00 ERA and 96 strikeouts this season. In his career, Wainwright is 8-3 with a 3.38 ERA and 68 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 13-3 in Foltynewicz’s last 16 starts and 3-10 in their last 13 games overall while the under is 5-0-1 in their last 6 games against a right-handed starter. St. Louis is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall and 41-19 in Wainwright’s last 60 starts against the NL East while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. St. Louis is 9-3 in Wainwright’s last 12 starts against Atlanta.
What we have here, is a hot pitcher in Foltynewicz, who has had his team win in 13 of his last 16 starts, against a red hot St. Louis team that’s picking up steam game by game. All in all, as much as I like Foltynewicz, the Braves are back to struggling again, and while Wainwright isn’t the same ace of old that we were used to, he still has done very well against the Braves in his career. I thought this line was going to be much more steep, so I’ll take the Cardinals and the reasonable line on Friday.
