The Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers face off in game two of their three game AL Central division weekend set on Saturday.
The Minnesota Twins will look to take the series after winning the opener by a final score of 9-4 on Friday, pushing the Twins’ winning streak to six games. Max Kepler and Eddie Rosario led the way, both going 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Joe Mauer went 3 for 5 as well with two RBIs while Brian Dozier went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to round out the scoring for Minnesota. Jorge Polanco went 2 for 4 while Byron Buxton, Miguel Sano and Jason Castro each added a base hit in the win. Kyle Gibson gave up three runs on five hits while walking a pair and striking out six over 4.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Ryan Pressly threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to get the win, improving to 2-2 this season. Jose Berrios will the start for game two and is 10-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 88 strikeouts this season. In his career, Berrios is 0-1 with a 19.06 ERA and 4 strikeouts against Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers will try to snap out of a funk after dropping six of their last seven games following their loss on Friday. Justin Upton went 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Mikie Mahtook also went 2 for 4 with a solo homer along with Jose Iglesias’ double and RBI in the loss. Nick Castellanos went 2 for 4 while James McCann and Ian Kinsler added base hits of their own in the losing effort for Detroit. Anibal Sanchez took the loss, falling to 3-3 this season after giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Jordan Zimmermann will start game two and is 7-9 with a 5.27 ERA and 85 strikeouts this season. In his career, Zimmermann is 3-2 with a 5.52 ERA and 28 strikeouts against Minnesota.
Minnesota is 7-1 in Berrios’ last 8 starts against a team with a losing record and 6-0 in their last 6 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 road games. Detroit is 3-8 in Zimmermann’s last 11 starts and 1-5 in their last 6 games overall while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 home games. Minnesota is 8-21 in the last 29 meetings between these two teams.
Berrios has been lit up in his brief history against the Tigers and has given up four or more earned in two of his last three starts. However, the Twins are rolling right now and need wins like these if they’re still going to make a push for the playoffs. Zimmermann pitches better at home than on the road, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has an ERA north of five this season and also in his career against Minnesota, so I’ll give my nod to the Twins here.
