The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies square off in game three of a four game NL East division set in MLB action on Saturday evening.
The New York Mets will look to win the series with a game to spare after narrowly taking game two by a final score of 7-6 on Friday. Yoenis Cespedes led the charge, going 2 for 5 with a home run and a team-high four RBIs, while Michael Conforto and Amed Rosario each added a solo home run. Neil Walker went 2 for 4 with an RBI of his own, while Asdrubal Cabrera went 2 for 2 with a double. Wilmer Flores, Brandon Nimmo and Dominic Smith added base hits of their own in the winning effort for the Mets. Seth Lugo gave up five runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out eight over 5.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Jerry Blevins received his 6th blown save of the year, but Hansel Robles picked him up, getting the win to improve to 7-3 this season while A.J. Ramos threw a scoreless 9th for his 22nd save of the campaign. Steven Matz will start game three and is 2-5 with a 5.77 ERA and 43 strikeouts this season. This will be Matz’s first career start against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will try ot get on the board with a win after their loss in game two on Friday. Tommy Joseph led the team with two RBIs, going 2 for 4 with a double while Cesar Hernandez went 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Odubel Herrera went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Nick Williams and Maikel Franco added base hits of their own in the loss. Freddy Galvis added a double of his own while Jorge Alfaro and starting pitcher Nick Pivetta chipped in base hits in the losing effort. Speaking of Pivetta, he gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits while walking a pair and striking out four over 4.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Hector Neris gave up the game-deciding run, taking the loss to fall to 4-5 this season. Aaron Nola will start game three and is 8-7 with a 3.12 ERA and 117 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nola is 1-1 with a 10.00 ERA and 6 strikeouts against the Mets.
New York is 1-6 in Matz’s last 7 starts and 8-1 in their last 9 road games against a team with a losing home record while the under is 6-1 in Matz’s last 7 division starts. Philadelphia is 4-1 in Nola’s last 5 home starts and 8-2 in their last 10 division matchups while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. New York is 39-14 in the last 53 meetings between these two teams in Philadelphia.
New York has thoroughly outplayed the Phillies in this series, however the Mets have struggled with Matz on the mound. Nola has been probably the best arm in the Phillies’ rotation, and has given up two runs or less in each of his last nine starts. Not a fan of the juice here, but I think Philadelphia can get a win on the board here behind another strong performance from Nola.
