Out in DC at Nationals Park on Saturday, the San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals will be kicking off their weekend MLB series.
In Friday’s opener, we had a postponement after a lengthy rain delay. That game will be made up in a split doubleheader on Sunday.
USA TODAY Sports
For the Saturday game, the Giants will be bringing out RHP Chris Stratton. In his 19.0 innings and 0-2 record this year, Stratton has a 6.63 ERA with 12 Ks.
The Giants have a few key hitters this year. Coming into this set, Buster Posey brings 116 hits, 50 runs, 12 homers and 51 RBI while Joe Panik has 102 hits, 41 runs and 37 RBI.
The Nationals will be bringing out RHP Edwin Jackson on Saturday. In his 29.0 innings and 2-2 record this year, Jackson has a 4.34 ERA with 22 Ks.
Washington has some notable bats as well. Coming into this set, Bryce Harper has 131 hits, 92 runs, 29 homers and 87 RBI while Daniel Murphy has 131 hits, 73 runs, 19 homers and 76 RBI.
The Giants are 4-1 in their last five overall, and 3-7 in their last 10 Saturday games. San Francisco is also 1-6 in Samardzija’s last seven Saturday starts and 0-4 in Samardzija’s last four starts versus the NL East.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are 4-1 in their last five overall, and 4-0 in Scherzer’s last four home starts. Washington is also 35-17 in Scherzer’s last 52 starts and 5-1 in Scherzer’s last six Saturday starts.
Stratton is going to have to be on point here if he wants to contain the Nationals’ lineup. As for Jackson, he’s been pretty good since becoming Washington’s fifth starter. In that time, Jackson has a 3.75 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in four starts. I don’t think Stratton will be able to keep up here in the face of some great batters, so I’ll take the Nationals for the win.
