Another chapter is written in the history of the Subway Series, as the Mets and Yankees face off in game one of a four game home-and-home interleague set from Yankee stadium on Monday.
The New York Mets come into this series looking to build off of their series closing 6-2 win over the Phillies, giving the Mets three wins in the four game set. Curtis Granderson stole the show, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Michael Conforto also homered, going 1 for 5 with two RBIs, while Wilmer Flores chipped in a run of his own in the win. Jose Reyes went 2 for 4 with a doublewhile Asdrubal Cabrera, Dominic Smith, Travis D’Arnaud and Amed Rosario each logged base hits in the win. Chris Flexen got the win to improve to 2-1 this season, giving up both runs on six hits while walking four and striking out five over five innings of work. Rafael Montero will start game one and is 1-8 with a 5.92 ERA and 68 strikeouts this season. In his career, Montero is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 3 strikeouts against the Yankees.
USA TODAY Sports
The New York Yankees will try to bounce back after dropping the final two games of their rivalry series against the Red Sox, including a 3-2 loss in the series finale on Sunday Night Baseball. Austin Romine went 1 for 3 with an RBI triple and Todd Frazier added the other Yankee run in the loss by way of a sac fly in the 8th. Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and Chase Headley all contributed base hits in the loss for the Yanks. Jordan Montgomery gave up just one run on two hits while walking three and striking out four over 5.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Aroldis Chapman gave up the game-tying run in the 9th and was responsible for the game-winning run in the 10th, notching his 4th blown save of the year while also taking the loss to fall to 4-2 this season. Luis Cessa will get the nod here and is 0-3 with a 4.83 ERA and 25 strikeouts this season. This will be Cessa's first career start against the Mets.
The Mets are 1-5 in Montero’s last 6 starts and 4-9 in their last 13 games overall while the over is 9-4 in their last 13 road games. The Yankees are 6-2 in their last 8 interleague home games and 8-3 in their last 11 against the NL East while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record. The over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I've made a lot of money going against Montero, and that's not going to change here. Cessa may not be a regular starter, but he's got a more consistent offense behind him that didn't have to travel even playing late last night. Montero starting is enough for me to go the other way here, so I'll take the Yankees to draw first blood here.
