The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers face off in game one of a very important two game set from Miller Park on Tuesday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to bounce back after dropping back-to-back games to close out their series with Toronto, including a 7-1 loss in the series finale on Sunday. David Freese logged the lone RBI in the loss, with Josh Harrison, Andrew McCutchen and Sean Rodriguez adding base knocks of their own as the Pirates put up just four hits as a team in the loss. Chad Kuhl took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking five and striking out six over five innings of work to fall to 5-8 this season. Ivan Nova will start the opener and is 10-9 with a 3.87 ERA and 94 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nova is 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 21 strikeouts against Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee Brewers will need to start stockpiling wins if they want to keep pace with the Cubs and Cardinals in the division race, and took a solid step in that direction with back-to-back wins to close out their series with Cincinnati, including a 7-4 win in the finale on Sunday. Domingo Santana led the way, going 1 for 4 with a three run home run. Ryan Braun went 2 for 4 with a pair of double and an RBI while Manny Pina went 1 for 3 with an RBI double of his own. Hernan Perez rounded out the scoring for the Brewers with a sac fly RBI while Eric Sogard went 1 for 3 with a triple. Jonathan Villar pitched in a double of his own, while Neil Walker went 2 for 4 at the dish. Matt Garza evened his record back up at 6-6 this season after giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking five and striking out a pair over 5.1 innings of work. Corey Knebel locked up shop in the 9th for his 22nd save of the year. Zach Davies will start game one and is 13-6 with a 4.40 ERA and 91 strikeouts this season. In his career, Davies is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA and 21 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 1-6 in Nova’s last 7 road starts and 3-7 in their last 10 road games while the under is 38-16-2 in their last 56 games overall. Milwaukee is 15-6 in Davies’ last 21 starts and 5-12 in their last 17 against a team with a losing record while the under is 20-6-2 in their last 28 games against a right-handed starter. Milwaukee is just1-4 in Davies’ last 5 starts against Pittsburgh.
Both of these starters are coming off of rough outings, giving up six earned respectively. The difference here is that Davies threw shutouts in three of the previous four starts while Nova has been a mess lately, giving up four or more earned runs in three of his last four starts, totalling 18 earned over 22.1 innings of work. Even with Davies’ paltry record against Milwaukee, he could very well be the ace of that rotation right now, so I’ll take Milwaukee and the low line in an important game.
