The Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees meet in game two of a double-header on Wednesday to close out their three game set after being rained out on Tuesday.
The Cleveland Indians may have been rained out on Tuesday but on Monday they took down the Yankees by a final score of 6-2 to make it five straight victories for the Tribe. The bulk of the damage for Cleveland was done via the home run, with Jose Ramirez launching a pair of solo home runs, while Austin Jackson and Carlos Santana also belted out a solo shot each. Bradley Zimmer went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a double as well in the winning effort for Cleveland. Corey Kluber got the win to improve to 13-4 this season after allowing both runs on three hits while striking out seven over eight innings of work. Ryan Merritt will start the second half of the double-header and is 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. This will be Merritt’s first career start against the Yankees.

The New York Yankees will look to rebound after a frustrating performance in game one on Monday. Chase Headley went yard with a solo home run while Todd Frazier added an RBI and Jacoby Ellsbury chipped in a double as the Yankees mustered up just three hits as a team in the loss. Luis Severino took the loss, falling to 11-6 this season after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits while walking three and striking out nine over 6.2 innings of work. Jordan Montgomery will start the finale and is 7-6 with a 4.00 ERA and 118 strikeouts this season. In his career, Montgomery is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 7 strikeouts against Cleveland.
Cleveland is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall and 12-2 in their last 14 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 3-1-2 in their last 6 games against the AL East. New York is 2-7 in Montgomery’s last 9 starts and 3-7 in their last 10 home games against a team with a winning home record while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games against the AL Central. Cleveland is 17-38 in the last 55 meetings between these two teams in New York.
It’s hard to say what we will see here considering it’s the second half of the double-header, but with that said, I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Merritt in a small sample size compared to Montgomery as a whole this season who is the definition of a mixed bag. Plus the Indians come into this one in much better form so I’ll take the Indians here.
