Out at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees will be kicking of their weekend MLB rivalry series.
The Red Sox are coming off a set against the Blue Jays. Boston won the first two games, then on Wednesday the Sox completed the sweep with a 7-1 win.
USA TODAY Sports
For Thursday’s game, the Red Sox will be bringing out LHP Eduardo Rodriguez. In his 105.1 innings and 4-4 record this year, Rodriguez has a 4.19 ERA with 114 Ks and 38 BBs.
Boston has some solid hitters this year. Coming into Wednesday, Mookie Betts had 138 hits, 82 runs, 18 homers and 77 RBI while Andrew Benintendi had 128 hits, 66 runs, 18 homers and 72 RBI. Betts doubled, plated a run and posted an RBI on Wednesday; Benintendi had a run.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they just finished up against the Indians. New York lost the opener on Monday, then in the Wednesday doubleheader New York was swept 2-1 in the early game and 9-4 in the later one.
New York will be bringing out LHP CC Sabathia in the start on Thursday. In his 115.1 innings and 10-5 record this year, Sabathia has a 3.82 ERA with 90 Ks and 40 BBs.
The Yankees have a few solid hitters as well. Didi Gregorius whiffed 0-for-3 in the late game Wednesday but leads the team on 127 hits, 56 runs, 19 homers and 61 RBI. Aaron Judge has 37 homers on the season, and he posted a hit with a run in the Wednesday finale.
The Red Sox are 2-6 in their last eight Thursday games, and 5-1 in their last six road games. Boston is also 13-5 in their last 18 versus a team with a winning record and the over is 5-0-2 in the Red Sox’ last seven during game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 1-4 in their last five versus the American League East and 3-8 in their last 11 home games versus a team with a winning road record. The Red Sox are 4-1 in the last five meetings between these two teams and the Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings in New York.
Over his last three starts, Rodriguez has allowed 12 earned across 17.2 innings in total. What’s worse, he hasn’t posted a win since May 26. As for Sabathia, he’s got two good starts under his belt, giving up three earned on nine hits in 13.0 innings. I think Boston will win this series, but in this opener the Yankees have a prime opportunity to post a victory. I'm not wild about the inconsistent Yanks right now, but I’ll take New York here.
