USA TODAY Sports
For Friday’s matchup, the Braves will be bringing out RHP Mike Foltynewicz. In his 137.2 innings and 10-10 record this year, Foltynewicz has a 4.84 ERA with 130 Ks.
Atlanta has a few notable hitters this season. Ender Inciarte came into this set with 172 hits, 83 runs, 10 homers and 50 RBI while Nick Markakis had 137 hits, 64 runs and 66 RBI. In the Thursday game, Inciarte logged one hit; Markakis had two hits.
Over on the Cubs’ side, they’re going with RHP John Lackey on Friday. In his 141.0 innings and 10-10 record this year, Lackey has a 4.98 ERA with 126 Ks and 45 BBs.
Chicago has some notable bats as well this year. Anthony Rizzo entered this series with 135 hits, 84 runs, 31 homers and 96 RBI while Kris Bryant had 132 hits, 91 runs, 24 homers and 57 RBI. Rizzo had a run and an RBI on Thursday; Bryant ripped a double and a homer with two RBI and two runs.
The Braves are 6-20 in their last 26 games versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30 and 5-1 in Foltynewicz’s last six starts in game two of a series. Atlanta is also 0-4 in Foltynewicz’s last four starts and 6-2 in Foltynewicz’s last eight starts with four days’ rest.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are 4-0 in the last four during game two of a series and 4-0 in Lackey’s last four home starts. Chicago is also 8-1 in Lackey’s last nine starts and 5-1 in Lackey’s last six Friday starts.
Foltynewicz was doing great last month, but he’s stumbled lately and is giving up an earned run per inning these days. As for Lackey, he’s given up 10 earned over 10.0 innings on 15 hits over his last two starts. Even if Lackey stumbles here I like the Cubs offense to help carry him over the finish line. I’ll take Chicago for the win.
