The Oakland A’s and the Seattle Mariners will do battle in a three game AL West division showdown from Safeco Field on Friday.
The Oakland A’s will look to snap a three game losing streak after following up their sweep of the Rangers by being swept by the Angels, including a 10-8 loss in the series finale on Wednesday. Matt Olson led the way, going 1 for 4 with a three run homer, while Bruce Maxwell added a two run shot of his own along with a double. Matt Joyce went 1 for 5 with a double and an RBI whiie Ryon Healy and Jed Lowrie added RBIs as well to round out the scoring for Oakland in the loss. Marcus Semien went 2 for 5 while Chad Pinder added a pinch-hit in the losing effort for the A’s. Kendall Graveman gave up five runs on six hits while walking three and striking out five over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Chris Hatcher gave up the game-deciding grand slam to Cliff Pennington, recording his 2nd blown save of the year, also taking the loss to fall to 0-2 this season. Sean Manaea will start game one and is 9-8 with a 4.55 ERA and 117 strikeouts this season. In his career, Manaea is 2-0 with a 4.76 ERA and 15 strikeouts against Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners will look to bounce back after dropping five straight games, including an 8-7 loss in their series finale against Baltimore on Wednesday to complete the sweep for the O’s. Mitch Haniger went 3 for 4 with a solo homer, a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Nelson cruz and Mike Zunino each went 1 for 4 with two RBIs in the rest of the scoring for the M’s in the loss. Yonder Alonso added a double, while Ben Gamel, Jean Segura, Robinson Cano and Taylor Motter all chipped in base hits for Seattle in the losing effort. Ariel Miranda gave up six runs on eight hits while striking out six over 4.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Christian Bergman took the loss, falling to 4-5 this season. Yovani Gallardo will start the opener and is 5-10 with a 5.78 ERA and 90 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gallardo is 2-5 with a 4.39 ERA and 48 strikeouts against Oakland. Seattle is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
Oakland is 4-8 in their last 12 division matchups and 6-3 in their last 9 home games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Seattle is 0-5 in their last 5 games overall and 2-5 in their last 7 division matchups while the over is 9-5-1 in their last 15 home games.
Gallardo hasn’t been very reliable this season, but the Mariners need wins in the worst way if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. Gallardo hasn’t had a lot of success in his career against the A’s, but sometimes you just gotta man up and step up to the challenge and I think that’s what happens here as Seattle draws first blood with a very important win on Friday.
