The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres take the field in game one of their doubleheader in Saturday afternoon MLB baseball.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have a huge lead in the National League West and the question is how big a margin will they win the division by. However, most of the talk revolves around the team’s first significant losing streak although it doesn’t effect the Rockies and Diamondbacks who need divine intervention to catch the Dodgers. Los Angeles will win 100+ games because of their ability to do everything well on the mound or at the plate. The Dodgers are #7 in runs scored at 4.97 but are only hitting .254 as a team which is below average but also says the offense gets hits with runners on base on a consistent basis. The top reason the LAD have the best record in the game is the pitching is the best in the majors with a team ERA of 3.20. The Los Angeles Dodgers give Saturday’s game one start at the San Diego Padres to Brock Stewart. Stewart is being called up from the minors and between the bullpen and three starts in 2017, he has gone 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 24 innings.

The San Diego Padres are not going anywhere in the National League West and are well below .500 but at this point the team is in 4th and have nine fewer defeats then the last place San Francisco Giants so staying out of the basement is the obvious goal. SD has struggled offensively for years and that has been the trend in 2017 with a .233 team batting average that is at the bottom in the game producing a Major League low 3.83 runs. That has put a ton of pressure on the San Diego pitching which is only #18 with a 4.56 team ERA which tells us the team needs more scoring to win games which their record says hasn’t happened often enough. Veteran left hander Clayton Richard takes the mound against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Richard comes off of a 6-2 loss at the Miami Marlins with five runs allowed on eight hits over seven innings pitched.
Los Angeles are 56-16 in their last 72 overall and Los Angeles are 56-16 in their last 72 games on grass while the under is 7-2-1 in Los Angeles last 10 Saturday games. San Diego are 1-4 in their last 5 games versus a right hander and San Diego are 1-5 in their last 6 games versus a team with a winning % above .600. The over is 6-1-2 in the last 9 meetings in San Diego and the over is 6-2-1 in the last 9 meetings.
I have a difficult time backing Stewart but the Padres are not an easy team to back either. Backing the Dodgers means betting the bats do some damage so perhaps something on the over or walk away…
