Over in the Big Apple at Citi Field on Monday, the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets will be kicking off their MLB series.
The Phillies are coming off a weekend set against the Marlins. Philadelphia won the first two games by one run apiece, then lost by that same margin on Saturday. In the Sunday finale, it took 12 innings but Philly got a 3-1 win.
USA TODAY Sports
Philly will be rolling with RHP Mark Leiter on Monday. In his 65.0 innings and 2-4 record this year, Leiter has a 3.88 ERA with 57 Ks.
The Phillies have a few hitters of note. Coming out of the week, Freddy Galvis led the way on 130 hits, 58 runs, 11 homers and 56 RBI while Odubel Herrera had 125 hits, 51 runs, 12 homers and 46 RBI. Galvis had two hits on Sunday; Herrera is still coming back from injury.
Over on the Mets’ side, they’re fresh off a series against the Astros. New York lost the first pair of games, then on Sunday the sweep was complete with an 8-6 Mets loss.
New York is going to be relying on RHP Rafael Montero on Monday. In his 91.1 innings and 3-9 record this year, Montero has a 5.12 ERA with 92 Ks.
New York has some solid bats as well. Michael Conforto came out of the week with 104 hits, 72 runs, 27 homers and 68 RBI while Asdrubal Cabrera had 103 hits, 56 runs, 11 homers and 44 RBI. Cabrera went 0-for-4 on Sunday; Conforto is unfortunately lost for the season with a shoulder injury.
The Phillies are 17-35 in their last 52 Monday games and the over is 4-1 in the Phillies’ last five Monday games. Philadelphia is also 25-56 in their last 81 road games, and 5-12 in their last 17 versus a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 1-5 in their last six during game one of a series and 1-5 in their last six Monday games. The under is 3-1-1 in the Mets’ last five Monday games and 7-3 in the Mets’ last 10 during game one of a series.
Leiter had a pretty solid run going in August, bagging a 3.41 ERA with 29 Ks in 29 innings, but he was only 1-2 in that time. As for Montero, he’s 3-5 with a 4.22 ERA in 11 starts since getting back into the rotation in June. I’m not especially jazzed about the Phillies offense, but I think Leiter can keep them in the game long enough to get a win here. I’ll take Philly to cover.
