The Los Angeles Angels take on the Oakland A’s in game two of their three game AL West division set on Tuesday night.
The Los Angeles Angels will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in their last five games, including an 11-9 extra innings win in Monday’s opener. Martin Maldonado and Luis Valbuena each had three RBIs with a home run, with Valbuena belting out a three run shot, while Maldonado hit a two run homer in addition to a solo shot. Kole Calhoun went 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs, while C.J. Cron and Albert Pujols each added an RBI in the win. Andrelton Simmons went 2 for 6 with a double while Justin Upton added a double of his own and Brandon Phillips contributed a base hit of his own in the winning effort for the Halos. Parker Bridwell had another rough outing, giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out five over just three innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Fernando Salad got the win to improve to 2-2 this season while Keynan Middleton notched his 3rd save of the year. Garrett Richards will make his first start since April 5th in game two and is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. In his career, Richards is 2-4 with a 4.20 ERA and 51 strikeouts against Oakland.

The Oakland A’s will try to bounce back after dropping game one on Monday in extra innings. Khris Davis and Matt Olson each logged three RBIs in the win, with Olson going 3 for 5 with a pair of home runs while Davis went 2 for 6 with a double. Bruce Maxwell and Marcus Semien each added a double, while Jed Lowrie went 3 for 4 at the dish. Matt Joyce added a pair of base knocks while Ryon Healy, Matt Chapman and Boog Powel each chipped in a base hit in the losing effort. Chris Smith didn’t fare any better than his counterpart, going just 3.1 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits while walking and striking out three apiece, not factoring in the decision. Blake Treinen took the loss, falling to 1-5 this season. Kendall Graveman will start game two and is 4-4 with a 4.54 ERA and 56 strikeouts this season. In his career, Graveman is 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA and 42 strikeouts against the Angels.
Los Angeles is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a right-handed starter and 0-5 in Richards’ last 5 road starts against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 games overall. Oakland is 1-4 in Graveman’s last 5 division starts and 0-6 in their last 6 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 home games. Los Angeles is 3-8 in Richards’ last 11 starts against Oakland.
Who knows what we’re going to see from Richards who is making just his second start of the season, and what can we really expect from an Oakland team that’s playing for pride at this point? Instead of trying to pick a side in this absolute crapshoot of a matchup, I’ll side with the over, as I expect Richards to have some rust, and some firepower from both offenses.
