The Houston Astros and the Seattle Mariners face off in game two of their three game AL West division set on Tuesday night.
The Houston Astros will look to build on their five game winning streak after taking the opener by a final score of 6-2 on Monday. Alex Bregman and Josh Reddick each logged two RBIs, with Bregman going 1 for 5 with a double. Yuli Gurriel and Brian McCann each launched a solo homer to round out the scoring for the ‘Stros in the winning effort. Marwin Gonzalez went 2 for 4 while George Springer added a base hit of his own in the win. Dallas Keuchel got the win to improve to 12-3 this season, allowing both runs on seven hits while walking a pair and striking out five over 7.2 innings of work. Justin Verlander will be making his Astros debut in game two and is 10-8 with a 3.82 ERA and 176 strikeouts this season. In his career, Verlander is 10-8 with a 3.15 ERA and 149 strikeouts against Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners could use a win to bounce back after having their three game winning streak snapped thanks to their loss in the opener on Monday. Kyle Seager led the charge, accounting for both Mariner runs in the loss, going 2 for 4 with a solo homer and an RBI single. Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger, Nelson Cruz, Mike Zunino and Guillermo Heredia each contributed a base hit in the losing effort for the M’s. Erasmo Ramirez gave up a pair of runs on four hits while walking two and striking out five over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Mark Rzepczynski took the loss, falling to 2-1 this season. Ariel Miranda will get the nod in game two and is 8-6 with a 4.85 ERA and 129 strikeouts this season. In his career, Miranda is 1-2 with a 4.99 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Houston.
Houston is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall and 2-10 in their last 12 games while the under is 9-3-2 in their last 14 division matchups. Seattle is 5-1 in their last 6 home games and 1-4 in Miranda’s last 5 home starts while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. Houston is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Seattle.
Normally I wouldn’t be a backer of a pitcher making his debut for a new team after spending his entire career with another, but even though Verlander was heartbroken leaving Detroit, he seems to be refreshed after being traded to a playoff contender, and quite possibly the favorite to win the AL pennant. Seattle needs wins to get back into the playoff hunt, but the fact of the matter is that the Astros are catching fire at just the right time and need to be the pick here.
