The St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres meet in game three of their four game set from Petco Park on Wednesday.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to win the set with a game to spare after taking game two by a final score of 8-4 on Tuesday. Jose Martinez went 3 for 3 with a pair of homers, a double and three RBIs in the win, while Harrison Bader went 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs of his own in the win. Yadier Molina and Stephen PIscotty each added an RBI to the winning effort, while Randal Grichuk, Paul DeJong and Alex Mejia all added base hits in the win for the Cards. Michael Wacha got the win to improve to 11-7 this season after giving up all four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking three and striking out six. Jack Flaherty will start game three and is 0-0 with an 11.25 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. This will be Flaherty’s first career start against San Diego.

The San Diego Padres will try to bounce back after their loss in game two on Tuesday. Starting pitcher Travis Wood tried to help his own cause, belting out a two run home run, while Wil Myers added an RBI of his own in the loss. Jose Pirela went 2 for 3 with a double, while Matt Szczur added a pair of hits as well in addition to base knocks from Carlos Asuaje, Yangervis Solarte and Cory Spangenberg. Wood gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits over just two innings of work, falling to 3-5 this season with the loss. Dinelson Lamet will start game three and is 7-6 with a 4.40 ERA and 115 strikeouts this season. This will be Lamet’s first career start against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall and 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL West while the over is 19-7-1 in their last 27 games overall. San Diego is 1-4 in Lamet’s last 5 starts and 9-4 in their last 13 home games against a team with a losing road record while the under is 10-4 in their last 14 home games against a right-handed starter. St. Louis is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in San Diego.
Lamet has been solid for the Padres lately, giving up three earned runs or less in each of his last eight starts. The problem for Lamet is that his team gives him little to no run support. I mean he gave up one run and struck out ten against the Dodgers in his last start and still took the loss because the Padres couldn’t put a run on the board. Don’t get me wrong, the Cards are the better team here, but Flaherty struggled in his debut against a Giants team that may be worse than the Padres. If Lamet can keep things under control, I like the Padres to steal game three on Wednesday.
