Over at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday, the Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Royals will be opening up their MLB series.
The Twins are coming off a set against the Rays this week. Minnesota lost the first two games 11-4 and 2-1, then on Wednesday the Twins prevented the sweep with a 10-6 win.

Minnesota will be going with RHP Kyle Gibson on Thursday. In his 128.1 innings and 9-10 record this year, Gibson has a 5.33 ERA with 95 Ks and 52 BBs.
The Twins have a few key bats on their roster this year. Brian Dozier brought 139 hits, 83 runs, 28 homers and 79 RBI into Wednesday while Joe Mauer had 134 hits, 59 runs and 56 RBI in that time. Dozier posted a solo homer on Wednesday; Mauer had the day off.
Over on the Royals’ side, they just finished up against the Tigers. The two teams split the first pair of games, then on Wednesday KC broke out for a 13-2 victory.
For the Thursday game, the Royals will be sending out RHP Sam Gaviglio. In his 62.1 innings and 3-5 record this year, Gaviglio has a 4.62 ERA with 40 Ks and 21 BBs.
KC has a handful of notable hitters as well. Eric Hosmer has 163 hits, 82 runs, 23 homers and 80 RBI coming into Wednesday while Lorenzo Cain had 150 hits, 79 runs, 14 homers and 45 RBI in that time. Cain had a hit, an RBI and a run on Wednesday; Hosmer had two RBI and a run.
The Twins are 3-7 in their last 10 games versus a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15 and 8-2 in Gibson’s last 10 road starts. Minnesota is also 4-1 in Gibson’s last five starts and 5-1 in Gibson’s last six starts versus the AL Central.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 1-7 in their last eight games versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30 and the over is 5-1 in the Royals’ last six Thursday games. The over is 4-1 in the Royals’ last five games versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30, and the Royals are 2-5 in the last seven versus a team with a winning record.
Gibson has been on a nice run lately. He’s got three straight quality starts, giving up just three earned over 19.2 innings overall. As for Gaviglio, he’s given up 12 earned over his last pair of starts in a span of 10.2 innings. Given the pitching matchup here, I’ve got to go with Gibson and the Twins to take a victory.
